Introduction to the property "Benview".For Sale - Contact OwnersThe history of Benview goes back to the times of early farming properties in Yass in the mid 1800's. As a larger property named Spring Flat it was owned by Samuel Davis in the 1880's. Spring Flat was sold in 1965 as a property of 928 acres extending to the Murrumbidgee River, having been held by the one family for over 50 years. The description on the Auction sale notice is an interesting indication of both the past and future from 1965, and much of the description is still reasonably applicable today. However, the present Benview is about one fifth the size of the 1965 Spring Flat as a result of land subdivisions. While the property no longer extends to the river, it slopes gently northwards and down a valley towards the river. It has all the buildings and main farm facilities that remain from 1965. The old cattle yards are still old (and still used). There is still "rural power and continuous telephone connected", and "Mails three times weekly". But sadly Australia Post no longer routinely collects mail from letter boxes as well as delivering to them. The Spring Flat Auction Notice of 1965 refers to the property being 37 miles from Canberra (21 miles by proposed new road). While a new road eventuated long ago and Benview is now 33 kilometres from the centre of Canberra, it took until 2004 for the new road to reach the ultimate stage of being sealed with bitumen. Since 1965 Benview has had several owners each of whom has left their mark on the property, particularly the current owners who have been there since 1981. It continues as a farming property but with many changes to the nearby properties, which now include a vineyard and other smaller rural holdings. |
